Does botox help with aging?

We all know that botox can help to reduce the signs of aging by smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines, but it can also be used as a preventative measure to help stop them from forming in the first place. Preventative botox starts before lines or wrinkles first start to appear, and the ideal candidate would be someone who has begun to see faint lines starting to form that over time could turn into future wrinkles. People in their mid to late twenties or early thirties would be at a good age to start preventative botox if they have a particularly expressive face and can see lines already starting to appear. Starting at a younger age means there will generally not be as many problem areas to deal with, and fewer treatments will be needed than someone who started later.

How can botox improve your face?

Botox is a neurotoxin that temporarily breaks the communication between the nerves and muscles causing the muscles to relax and not make the expressions that can result in wrinkles. Botox is a nerve blocker and, as such, works differently than dermal fillers that use an injection of a gel or collagen substitutes to improve the skin.

Botox is used to treat two types of wrinkles: dynamic and static. Dynamic wrinkles are those that are only visible when making facial expressions such as smiling or frowning; static lines are the deep wrinkles that have developed over time, the formation of which is what preventative botox seeks to avoid.

How does botox make you look younger?

Our face is the most visible part of our body, and so what is projected from it can make a significant difference in how we are perceived by others. Wrinkles that have formed over time can send the wrong message about how we actually feel. For example:

• The lines between the eyebrows (often referred to as the “elevens” or frown lines) can give an appearance of looking angry when you’re not.
• Static forehead lines can make you look worried.
• The static lines underneath the eyes can make you look tired.
• The “smoker’s lines” above your mouth can also make you look angry or pensive.
• The marionette lines that run from the edges of the mouth can convey sadness or displeasure.

Having these wrinkles ironed out and softened can make you look younger, happier – and less angry!

What areas of the face can be treated with botox?

The most popular areas targeted for preventative botox are frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. These are also common areas used for the regular use of botox, along with:

• Corners of the mouth
• Chin dimples
• Lip lines (smoker’s lines)
• Nose lines (nasolabial folds)
