Injectable neurotoxins or neuromodulators—sold under brand names such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin—work to smooth fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily relaxing muscles that are responsible for creating these fine lines and wrinkles. An important difference is that these neurotoxins work predominantly on the wrinkles that are present when facial muscles are used to create expression, known as dynamic wrinkles. Neurotoxins are not designed to treat static wrinkles, which are wrinkles that are seen even at rest. Fillers work on wrinkles seen at rest.

The effects of injectable fillers can last anywhere between three months to two years, depending on what product is being used, where on the body the product is being injected, and the patient’s individual metabolism. These injectables typically last for:

• Radiesse — Up to 24 months
• Belotero — 6 to 12 months
• Botox — 3 to 4 months
• Dysport — Up to 5 months
• Xeomin — 3 to 6 months
